Not One Red Cent!

One of the news stories that caught my eye recently was a report in the New York Post that the state government is beginning talks to raise the pay of the legislature and state officials.

I understand that these people need a living wage. We all do. 15 years without a raise is a long time.

I would like to point out two things:

  1. The reputation of the  NY state government is not so good right now, for obvious reasons.
  2. The average salary of politician or state official is well above the average New Yorker’s annual salary.

One of the things that always irks me about government is that even if there is a scandal attached a particular government official, they will continue to receive their regular salary and benefits.

If an employee in the private sector does something illegal or they are unable to do the job, they are fired.  Their salary and benefits are gone.

I am simply bothered by the fact that while millions of us are trying to get by on unemployment or barely there paychecks, these politicians and state officials make upwards of $80,00 a year.

I get what they are doing is important, but the salary has to be justified. Frankly, I believe that some of these people don’t deserve their paycheck.
