I think it is pretty safe to say that life is never dull.
Up until 12 years ago, Jason Padgett followed the motto “work hard, play harder”. A college dropout, Jason worked for his father’s furniture company. Then he was mugged. While his physical scars healed, his brain was completely altered. Now Jason is a math genius who has a completely unique take on mathematics.
His journey is documented in the book, Struck by Genius: How a Brain Injury Made Me a Mathematical Marvel. Co written by Padgett and Maureen Ann Seaberg, we start by meeting the Jason who spend his free time at the gym during the day and at the bar at night. Academics was not his strong suit. After his mugging, Jason became a hermit who discovered his genius, found his true calling and lived to see his own happily ever after.
This book is an interesting memoir. Jason is one of the few people in the world struck by savant syndrome. I picked it up randomly at the library. I didn’t know what to expect, though the concept sounded appealing. It’s not the most exciting memoir I’ve ever read, but it is one of the most unique memoirs I’ve ever read.
Do I recommend it? Maybe.
