It was announced earlier this week that Sonia Manzano was retiring.
Generations of children knew her as Maria on Sesame Street.
The education she provided was not just letters, numbers and concepts.
She was positive female Latina character when they were few or none on television.
She taught children to appreciate themselves, the world around them and to respect others, especially those that are different.
She will be remembered as a positive role model for generations to come.
