The story of boy meets girl is as old as story telling. But what happens when you add in a couple of dalmatians, their offspring and a woman who would like nothing more than to make a coat from the puppies pelts: 101 Dalmatians (1996).
A live action reboot of the 1961 animated film, Roger (Jeff Daniels) and Anita (Joely Richardson) have a meet-cute early in the film, assisted by their dogs, Pongo and Perdita. They fall in love, get married and their dogs have puppies. Then Cruella De Vil (Glenn Close) makes her grand entrance. Obsessed with the puppies and the idea of making a coat from their pelts, she sends her stooges, Jasper (Hugh Laurie) and Horace (Mark Williams) to kidnap and kill the puppies.
Now it is up to the puppies’ parents, with the help of their fellow animals, to rescue their offspring before it is too late.
Let’s call it what it is: a kid’s movie. But I will say that Glenn Close’s performance ranks up there with the best of the Disney villains.
Do I recommend it? Well, let me put it this way. If your under 10, I would say yes. But if your adult, the movie is a bit absurd. Then I would say no.
