Downton Abbey Series 6 Episode 2 Recap: Mrs. Hughes The Bridezilla, Thomas Looks For Another Job & Marigold Disappears

As usual, my recaps contain spoilers. Read at your own risk if you have not seen the episode and would like to remain spoiler free.

  • The battle lines for the hospital’s future are drawn. Isobel (Penelope Wilton) and Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) vs Robert (Hugh Bonneville) and Violet (Dame Maggie Smith). Robert tries to keep Cora away from the argument, but Cora, like any opinionated, intelligent woman, does not need Robert to make decisions for her.
  • Forced to once again travel to London to deal with her not so amiable editor, Edith (Laura Carmichael) leaves her daughter with her sister and her parents. Mary (Michelle Dockery) needs to inspect the pigs for the upcoming Malton Fat-Stock Show. The pig man happens to be Mr. Drewe (Andrew Scarborough). Mrs. Drewe (Emma Lowndes) is not quite over loosing Marigold and takes her during the Fat-Stock show. To keep the peace and the sanity of both families, Mr. Drewe concludes that it’s time to leave Yew Tree farm. The one person I feel sorry for in this charade is Marigold. I hope she does not need a whole lot of therapy when she grows up.
  • Mary must deal with Mr. Finch, who informs her of the Fat Stock show, but is surprised that Mary is now taking over the role of estate manager. A woman, running the estate. Shocking, right?

  • Those of you who have not seen this episode will be shocked by the following statement: Mrs. Hughes (Phyllis Logan), the Bridezilla. While Mr. Carson (Jim Carter) is agreeable to be married within walls of Downton Abbey, his fiance, like all brides to be, would like a say in where she is married. In the words of every bridezilla since the beginning of time: “It’s my day”. I say let Mrs. Hughes decide, she’s been waiting long enough to get married in the first place.
  • Miss Denker’s  (Sue Johnston) little snitch last episode about the possible reduction in staff has not been forgotten by Thomas (Rob James- Collier). He goes on a job interview and is shocked to hear that an under butler position entails the responsibilities of valet, chauffer and butler. The times, they are a changing.
  • Daisy (Sophie McShera) is still worried that her little outburst last episode has cost her father in law his farm. She is encouraged by Baxter (Raquel Cassidy) and Molesley (Kevin Doyle) to go to Cora for help , but Cora’s help only extends so far.
  • Realizing that not all modern technology is bad, Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol), concedes that she may include canned horseradish in a recipe instead of making it from scratch.

Other fans have said that this episode was a little on the dull side and I do agree with them. However, I have a feeling with a lull in the action, there are major plot twists coming soon that will encourage screaming at the television and in social media.

Dowager line  of the week: “Mine are the true facts!”.
