In most super hero movies, no one thinks twice when they see property destroyed when the hero is fighting the villain.
Hancock (2008) is different.
John Hancock (Will Smith) has saved the city of Los Angeles more than anyone can count. He has also destroyed parts of the city in the process. That destruction has left the residents of Los Angeles with a bitter taste in their mouth in regards to their local super hero.
Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman) is one of many that Hancock has saved. Convinced that there is a way to revive Hancock’s reputation, Ray takes John home to meet his family. Ray’s wife, Mary (Charlize Theron), would prefer to keep John out of her home and away from her children, despite the fact that her son, Aaron (Jae Head) idolizes John.
Can Ray return to John his once stellar reputation? Will Mary ever reveal her reasons against having John Hancock in her home?
A unique hybrid of the comedy/superheroes genres, this film lightens up a plot that could be too serious for its own good. And it’s nice to see a fallible superhero in a sea of infallible g-d like heroes.
Do I recommend it? Why not?
