For many years (and still today to a degree that makes many angry and uncomfortable), television reflected only one view of the world. In the 1990’s, television began to reflect the audience and their taste.
In 1996, future Oscar winner Jamie Foxx had his own television show, The Jamie Foxx Show. Airing from 1996-2001, Jamie King (Jamie Foxx) aspires to become a success in the entertainment industry. Coming from a small town in Texas, Jamie realizes that he has to find another way to earn a living while he works towards his dream. His temporary occupation is working at the hotel owned by his aunt and uncle (Ellia English and Garrett Morris).
At the same time, another television show reflected not only the diversity of America, but also the changing social landscape.
Living Single (1993-1998), told the story of four single African-American women sharing an apartment in Brooklyn. After Golden Girls and before Sex and the City, Living Single filled the gap of having strong women who retain their friendships above all else on television. Maxine Shaw (Erika Alexander) is the type A perfectionist. Regine Hunter (Kim Fields) is the man hungry fashion plate. Khadijah James (Queen Latifah) is the tomboy. Synclaire James-Jones (Kim Coles) is the ditz with the heart of gold. Living with ladies in the same building is Kyle Barker (Terrence TC Carson) and Overton Jones (John Henton).
Do I recommend them? Why not, we all need a little color in our lives and on television.
