By the time your 18 and you have lived through the turbulent teenage years, you might think that the worst is over. It has only begun.
In the 1995 movie Circle Of Friends, Bernadette “Benny” Hogan (Minnie Driver) is a college student in 1950’s Ireland. Her best friends are Eve Malone (Geraldine O’Rawe) and Nan Mahon (Saffron Burrows). Complicating Benny’s life is her crush on Jack Foley (Chris O’Donnell). Will Benny survive her early 20’s, and figure out what her future could possibly look like?
The best stories are always the universal stories. No matter the era the story is set in or the cultural or religious traditions of the characters, if the audience can connect with the characters, then the writer has done his or her job. Your early to mid twenties may seem very far away from your teen years, but in reality, the experience of growing and changing is not that difference. Benny may be living in Ireland in the 1950’s, but her journey is one that we can all relate to.
I recommend it.
