Throwback Thursday-The Piano (1993)

A blessing in disguise is sometimes not appreciated until we can see it in hindsight.

In the 1993 film, The Piano, Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) is a mute woman with a young daughter, Flora (Anna Paquin). Unable to find a husband in her native Scotland, Ada is sent to New Zealand to marry Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill), a man whom she has never met and was chosen for her. Traveling with Ada and Flora is Ada’s most prized possession, her beloved piano.

The marriage does not start off on a good note when Alisdair sells Ada’s piano to a neighbor, George Baines (Harvey Keitel). George offers to sell Ada back her piano, if she teaches him to play. What starts as a business arrangement becomes something else entirely.

Living on New Zealand’s rugged and somewhat isolating North¬†Island does not make this arrangement any easier. Can Ada not only survive in this new land with her husband, but find happiness?

What I like about this movie is that Ada could have just given up and gone along with the plan. But she decided to step up and speak out for what she wants. That is a message that we all need to hear, especially women who feel powerless in the face of change and unforeseen circumstances.

I recommend it.
