Throwback Thursday-Contact (1997)

Among the many questions that have plagued human mortals since the beginning of time, one has stood out: are we alone in the universe?

The 1997 movie, Contact, asks this question. Dr. Ellie Arroway (Jodie Foster) is convinced that there is intelligent life outside of Earth. After years of dogged research, she has found the radio proof that she needs. The problem is that no one believes her, especially her colleague, Palmer Joss (Matthew McConaughey).

This movie stands out for several reasons. The first is Jodie Foster’s performance. The audience sees the world through Ellie’s eyes and we want the rest of the characters to see and understand what she sees and understands. The second is that the science feel legitimate. The writers of the screenplay smartly utilized real scientific terms to add a layer of reality of the film. The third is that Ellie is not the typical female lead. There is no romantic happy ending, but she does find the ending that she desires.

I recommend it.
