Flashback Friday-Gangs Of New York (2002)

Revenge is often a dish served cold.

In the 2002 film, Gangs Of New York, Amsterdam Vallon (Leonardo DiCaprio) watched his father die in a gang fight when he was a boy. For his own safety, Amsterdam was taken away from his home in New York City.

While the Civil War rages on, Amsterdam has returned to the city. One of the unspoken leaders within the city is Bill “The Butcher” Cutting (Daniel Day-Lewis). Bill is very anti-immigration and is not shy about sharing his opinions. While the war continues and the people are rioting due to the forced conscription, Amsterdam has one goal:avenge his father’s death.

This movie is part history, part fictional narrative and overall a great film. Creating a film based on true events is difficult due to the details that must included to ensure historical accuracy. But director Martin Scorsese and his creative staff were able to meld verified historical facts with the narrative of revenge.

I recommend it.
