At the precipice of World War II, Martha and Waitstill Sharp were an ordinary couple from Massachusetts. Waitstill was a Unitarian minister and Martha was a homemaker. They had two young children and had every reason to watch world events unfold from afar. Instead Mr. and Mrs. Sharp put their lives on hold to help the refugees escape from Nazi controlled Europe.
Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War, written by their grandson, Artemis Joukowsky III, tells the story of an ordinary couple who did something extraordinary.
I found myself at certain points, while reading this book, holding my breath. While their resources were not unlimited, Martha and Waitstill Sharp were still able to save lives, despite the danger to them and their colleagues.
It is a reminder that there are people in this world who are not afraid to face down injustice and prejudice when they see it.
I absolutely recommend it.
