Sometimes, in the search for love, we may not realize that the partner we have been searching for has been with us the entire time.
In Emma, Mr. Knightley, and Chili-Slaw Dogs, Caroline Ashley and Brooks Elliott have been best friends for as long as they can remember. Caroline is a journalist who put her career on hold to care for her mother after her father’s passing. Brooks’s parents marriage ended long ago, but his father is still prostrate with grief over the loss of his wife. Teaching at a nearby college, Brooks often returns home to see his father, grandmother and Caroline. In a world where certain cultural traditions are still enforced, Brooks is the sole voice of sanity that Caroline leans on.
Both Brooks and Caroline are happy with the state of their friendship. Then a handsome, charismatic stranger comes into town. Caroline is enchanted and Brooks is unsure of the new arrival. Their friendship is about to change, but how will it change?
Last night I wrote about Pride, Prejudice and Cheese Grits. It was not my favorite Austen adaptation. This adaptation of Emma, I liked. I could feel the chemistry between Caroline and Brooks. It was palpable from nearly the first page. My only criticism is that the ending was a little rushed.
Do I recommend it? Yes.
