People Like Us: The New Wave of Candidates Knocking at Democracy’s Door Book Review

For most of American history, those in power (especially in politics) were a homogeneous bunch: male, Christian, mostly wealthy, white and heterosexual.

Thankfully, there is change coming to this country. Women, citizens of colors and members of the LGBTQ community are breaking barriers are stepping into the corridors of power at a rate that is unprecedented.

The new book, People Like Us: The New Wave of Candidates Knocking at Democracy’s Door, by Sayu Bhojwani tells the stories of a diverse group of local and state politicians who are breaking the political status quo and ensuring that those in power look like those who they are representing. One of those profiled is a formerly undocumented immigrant from Mexico. Another came to this country as child refugee. Others are citizens of color or those whose financial means are limited.

This book is amazing. It reminds me that America is better than the racist, homophobic and prejudiced views that come out of the mouths of some our fellow citizens. We can be better, we enfranchise everyone and give them an opportunity to lead us into the future. The question is, are we willing to do what it takes to create that future?

I recommend it.
