When one is elected to the Senate, he or she takes the following oath:
I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.
In short, they promise to do everything they can to protect this country and its citizens. These days, I have to wonder if certain members of the government have forgone this oath to protect their careers?
Senator John Kennedy (R-Louisiana) (not to be confused with JFK) was a guest on this morning’s episode of Meet the Press. When pressed by host Chuck Todd about who was responsible for the hacking of the DNC server in 2016, Senator Kennedy accused Ukraine of meddling in the election.
If Senator Kennedy was someone sitting in their basement with an internet connection and too much time on their hands, that would be one thing. But he is a United States Senator who was hired by the voters to represent them. If I lived in the area that he represents, I would wonder if he truly represents me or is looking to save his own skin? I would also wonder if he is loyal to this country or to Putin, who has not been exactly shy about wanting to mess with the United States.
As far as I am concerned, the evidence is clear. Russia played a hand in the results of the 2016 Presidential election. Whether someone else believes that or not is their right. However, this man took an oath to protect this country. By blindly going along with Russia, he is violating that oath.
It’s not up to me to decide if Senator Kennedy will be re-elected. But if I lived in his area, I would think twice about a Senator who supports another country above his own.
