Totally Under Control Review

When Covid-19 first appeared on the scene at the beginning of the year, no one knew what to make this virus that seemed to come out of nowhere. Looking back, we know now that a little common sense would have saved lives and saved the economy. But there is no going back.

Totally Under Control premiered last month on Hulu. This 2 hour documentary tells the story of how mismanagement and partisanship led to the mess that we are currently in. The film also compares the response of the United States to that of South Korea.

I couldn’t help but get angry as I watched the movie. There were so many opportunities to control the outbreak, but due to a number of circumstances, those opportunities were not taken. The lost opportunities and the missteps created opened the door for the destruction of our economy and the loss of 225,000 Americans.

If nothing else, this is a warning and a lesson learned in a painful way. There will be another virus in the future with the potential to kill hundreds of thousands of people. If we do not take logical and non-partisan steps to control it, we will only repeat the same mistakes that has led to our current predicament.

I absolutely recommend it.

Totally Under Control is available for streaming on Hulu.

Thoughts On the Anniversary of Kristallnacht and the Results of the Presidential Election

For generations, Americans have believed that our democracy was set in stone. Our basic rights, the political and cultural cornerstone of our nation was untouchable. Then you know who was elected President four years ago and it looked the American democracy was on shaky ground.

The anniversary of Kristallnacht is tomorrow and Tuesday. It was the unofficial beginning of the Holocaust. It was also a sign that dignity, democracy and humanity no longer existed in Germany.

Thankfully, Americans have shown our democracy and our freedoms are worth fighting for. In electing Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, we have perhaps avoided the path that led the to Kristallnacht and the Holocaust. But that does not mean that we can rest on our laurels. There is still much more work to be done before we can be the country that lives out the ideals in our founding documents.

RIP Alex Trebek

In the range of media personalities, there are two different types of people at each end. On one end is the person who acts outrageous in public, forcing jaws to drop and questions like “did so and so really say that”?. On the other end is the person who in public is calm under pressure and feels more like a friend than someone who appears on your television screen nightly.

The late Alex Trebek was the latter. He died today from cancer. Hosting the trivia game show Jeopardy since 1984, he has become a familiar face for generations of television viewers. His easy going demeanor and unaffected manner was the reason that Jeopardy has been on the air or nearly forty years.

It also opened the door to parodies, specifically Celebrity Jeopardy on Saturday Night Live.

May his memory be a blessing. Z”L.
