Terrible Virtue: A Novel Book Review

When we put those we admire on a pedestal, we sometimes forget that the person on the pedestal is a human being with the same faults as any other human being.

Margaret Sanger did not intentionally start out life as a first wave feminist and the originator of Planned Parenthood. Her life and the causes that dominated her life is chronicled in the novel Terrible Virtue: A Novel. Written by Ellen Feldman, the novel starts during Margaret’s early years. She is one of 13 children. Her mother dies young, after years of living through the endless cycle of having a children, working tirelessly to care for her family before having another child.

As an adult, Margaret marries and has three children of her own. She is drawn to the cause of abortion and women’s reproductive health. In spite of the laws at the time, Margaret (who is living in New York City) reaches out to the lower class and immigrant women who desperately need her services. While she is doing this, there are many who are fighting to see her jailed and her ability to help the women in need stopped indefinitely. Adding to the drama, Margaret is feeling the heat at home. Her marriage is falling apart and her children are starting to feel like they are second best.

I really enjoyed reading this book. I really enjoyed it because not only did the writer perfectly show Margaret Sanger as human being (not just a heroine on a pedestal), but also because the same issues that existed in her time sadly still exist in ours.

I absolutely recommend it.

The 2016 Election, The Trump Tapes And Perhaps, Finally A Change For The Better

In light of the leaking of the tapes this weekend, perhaps a change for the better is on the horizon.

The language in the video is not new. Women have been viewed as mindless, brainless, soul less sexual objects since the beginning of time. The Republican Party (especially the male politicians) in recent years has not been shy about their repellent and antiquated views on women-centric topics (i.e. abortion, rape and sexual assault).

Only time will tell who takes the oath of office next year. I can only hope that the leak of the Trump tapes will open the door to an honest discussion of very difficult topics and the steps we need to take to ensure that these conversations are no longer needed.

I’m still with her and you should be too.

Donald Trump, Again….But This Time On Abortion

Here we go again, another blog post about Donald Trump and why he is should not be taking the oath of office next January. But it must be done.

This time, it is about a topic that should be a private decision, but unfortunately, it is not: abortion.

First he says that women who have abortions should be punished. Then he says that it is not the woman who should be punished, but the medical professional who performed the abortion should be held legally responsible for the abortion.

First of all, when your President, once you make a decision and/or statement, there is no recanting or going back. You stick to your guns.

Secondly, this man not only is on his third marriage, but he has daughters and granddaughters. Let me offer this scenario: Donald Trump is elected President Of The United States (perish the thought, I know, but go with me for this, please) and he signs legislation on a bill that would not only nullify  Roe V. Wade, but it would also send women and/or their doctors to jail for performing abortions.

Let’s say that a woman of child-birthing age within his personal circle is pregnant, but the doctors have determined that if the pregnancy continues to full term, they could not say with 100% certainty that the mother and/or the child will survive the birth. They abort the pregnancy to allow the woman to have other children in the future. The woman and/or her doctors are arrested and forced to stand trial for saving the life of the mother and any future children she may have.

If this is the future of our country, then I am more than a little scared.

I’m going to end this post with a video from the 2008 election, because it just as relevant today as it was then.

And the Republications wonder why 55% of female voters are voting for Hillary Clinton.

Enjoy your weekend.

John Oliver On Abortion Rights….Absolute Perfection

I could go on and on about why abortion must be legal in this country, but I will let John Oliver do it. Well, because he is John Oliver and he is brilliant.
