I Don’t Get It

I am not a parent myself, but I imagine that it is the most difficult and gratifying job that anyone would dare to take on.

I have a friend who is trying to get pregnant. She and her husband have been together for a number of years. Due to several complications which I will not further disclose for privacy’s sake, I will only say that they have struggled to get pregnant. It has been a test of faith and courage not just for them, but for the entire family.

Then there are women like Brittany Cherokee Dawn Bell. Three months ago, Ms. Bell gave birth to beautiful baby girl. Now the child is dead and her mother, who has two older children, has been charged with neglect. Her bail was set at a paltry $10,000.

Condoms were invented for a reason. Birth control was invented for a reason.  Roe V. Wade is still legal for a reason. It is legal to drop an infant at a hospital, a fire house or at a police station and not be accused of neglecting the child. It’s called the Safe Haven law.

It’s very simple. If you are unable or not ready to care for the child, you have options.

But Ms. Bell clearly did not think about her options. Now she is in jail, her youngest daughter is dead and her older children may spend the rest of their childhood under the care of the government.

I don’t get it.
