In the 1980’s, as traditional gender roles began to change, that change was reflected in television.
Two television shows reflected that change.
In Charles In Charge (1984-1990), Charles (Scott Baio) is a college student who is supporting himself by being the nanny/housekeeper to the Powell family. As anyone who is balancing both school and work will tell you, it is a hefty load, especially when one’s job is to be the nanny to young charges who are not much younger than you are.
A year after Charles In Charge premiered, Mr. Belvedere (1985-1990) hit the small screen. Mr. Belvedere (Christopher Hewett) is a British butler working for a typical suburban American family. Bringing a British upper class sensibility to the average middle class life made for an interesting television program.
Do I recommend them? The fashion is a bit dated, but the sentiment and the overall narrative is not limited to the 1980’s. Yes, I recommend them.
