Freedom Means Sh*t if Your Dead

If there is one thing that defines the United States, it is that our freedom is everything to us. Our founding documents make freedom part and parcel of everything that this nation is built on. But it comes with a cost.

It also mean sh*t if your dead.

In Texas and Florida, Governors Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott, have rescinded Covid-19 masking mandates. Governor DeSantis said the following:

“The federal government has no right to tell parents that in order for their kids to attend school in person, they must be forced to wear a mask all day, every day,” said Governor Ron DeSantis. “Many Florida schoolchildren have suffered under forced masking policies, and it is prudent to protect the ability of parents to make decisions regarding the wearing of masks by their children.”

Governor Abbott has chosen to not only refuse to implement statewide standards, but he is preventing local officials from doing the same.

“Going forward, in Texas, there will not be any government-imposed shutdowns or mask mandates,” Abbott said. “Everyone already knows what to do.”

I will not and cannot deny that parents have the right to make the healthcare decisions for their children. However, school has started or will start soon (depending on where you live). The delta variant has proven to be more deadly than the initial version of the virus. According to a NY Times article on July 20th, 83% of new cases are due to the variant. We also have to take into account that children ages 0-12 are still not eligible for the vaccine, opening the door to an unknown number of new cases in both children and adults.

Freedom is important. But it cannot help you if you are lying comatose on a hospital bed. Nor does it mean anything if you are with your maker because you were too foolish to take a simple life saving shot.

Paxton Smith is My New Hero

When fighting against injustice, superheroes don’t always wear capes or use fantastic weaponry. Some are just brave enough to stand up and speak their truths.

Earlier this months, recent Texas high school graduate Paxton Smith stepped up the microphone to give her valedictorian speech. Instead of reading from the text that was approved by the administration, she used her platform to speak out against the heartbeat bill signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott.

The problem with this bill is that it goes into effect before pregnancy is detected, taking away the person’s right to make a decision about their body and their future. The problem with this bill and others like it is that is shortsighted. It does not take into account if the pregnancy comes about via rape, incest, or if it is medically necessary to abort the pregnancy. It also ignores the millions of already existing children who for a variety of reasons, are growing up in less than economically ideal circumstances. Where is the need to help those kids?

We need more young women like Paxton Smith. With future leaders like her, I see a bright future for this country.

How Many More Deaths Does Texas Governor Greg Abbott Want on His Watch?

With the anniversary of the explosion of Covid-19 coming up next week, I would have hoped that logic and science would have finally won the day. But stupidity and politics still have still have a hand to play.

Earlier this week, Texas Governor Greg Abbott ended the mask mandate. As of next Wednesday, March 10th, all businesses are re-opening as if the pandemic never happened.

From an economic perspective, his decision is a sound one. The only way to restore the state and the nation to the pre-pandemic financial state is to get people working again. That being said, the only way we can contain this virus and stop the spread is to follow the protocols established by the CDC and the medical community.

Adding to the foolishness is the Governor’s statement blaming the spread of Covid-19 on undocumented Mexican immigrants and the Biden administration.

I wonder, as many others have wondered, if this is nothing but a smoke screen? The mess that the snow storm created is far from cleaned up. If he thinks that solely catering to his base is enough to keep him in office, he should look to the former President. There is a reason why you know who is thankfully no longer on the job.

The fact is that we can only return to some version of normal if we work together. It does not help that some people are so thickheaded that they ignore the facts to save their own skins.

Have the Members of the Texas GOP Lost Their Minds?

The game of politics has always been a sticky one. The question I have to ask, is when push comes to shove, do those in the halls of power serve themselves or the voters who hired them?

The big political news of the week is that Ted Cruz decided that it was a good time to take a vacation in Mexico while his fellow Texans are trying their best to survive a snow storm that has knocked out power, heat, and water.

On top of what can only be described as a foolish decision, Governor Greg Abbott went on Fox News and blamed New York Congressperson Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Green New Deal for the outages.

The cherry on top is the following statement by the state’s former Governor, Rick Perry

. “Texans would be without electricity for longer than three days to keep the federal government out of their business,”

What is the purpose of the federal government, if not to step in when a storm of this magnitude creates such destruction in its wake? People are burning their furniture and bundling up in as many clothes or blankets as humanly possible to stay warm.

I don’t know who these men are trying to impress. It’s as if they care more about themselves or their careers than their constituents. But considering the party’s track record over the last few years, I expect nothing less.

P.S. While the Texas GOP does nothing, both AOC and Beto O’Rourke have stepped up to help. It doesn’t take a genius to see who is putting their money where their mouth is and who isn’t.
