Why Are We Not Talking About Puerto Rico?

America has been hit by three hurricanes in a very short amount of time: Irma, Harvey and Maria.

Hurricane Maria destroyed Puerto Rico, leaving millions of American citizens without the basic necessities. While another President would focus his or her energy to getting aid and supplies to those who are in need, President Trump decided to focus on one thing: the NFL players who protested injustice by taking a knee, locking arms or simply not being on the field while the Star Spangled Banner was sung at the beginning of the game.

The rules of American democracy can be boiled down to one simple statement: I may not agree with you, but I will support your right to speak.

President Trump has forgotten this. He has also forgotten that he is no longer the owner of a private corporation who, as long as he stays within the legal and moral boundaries, can run his company as he likes. He is now a public servant, beholden to the citizens of this country. We are his employers, he is our employee

I support those who chose to take a knee in silent protest. My heart also goes out to those who are trying to put their lives back together in Puerto Rico, Florida and Texas. We need to focus on helping our fellow citizens, not tearing them down.

Are you listening President Trump?

Climate Change What?????

Climate change, whether we like it or not, is a reality. The ice caps are melting, the weather is becoming more extreme and in case anyone is living under a rock, Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas not even two weeks ago, Hurricane Irma has left a path of destruction through the Caribbean on her way to the American southeast and Hurricane Jose is on the tail of Hurricane Irma.

The man sitting in the Oval Office not only took the US out of the Paris Climate Accord earlier this year, but he also signed an executive order not too long ago (i.e. just before Harvey made landfall in Texas) that undid the Federal Flood Risk Management Standard signed into law by the Obama Administration.

Did anyone else see The Day After Tomorrow from 2004? While the film makers did not exactly adhere to the facts that scientists agree on regarding climate change, the message of the film is as real today as it was 13 years ago.

When we bite Mother Nature, she bites back, twice as hard.

New Randy Rainbow Video-“DACA Shame”

There is nothing like a new Randy Rainbow video to provide a satirical light in the darkness that is the Trump Presidency.

His new video “DACA Shame” is sheer perfection.

Protect DACA

For untold generations of immigrants, America has been the “golden medina” or the golden land. America represented the freedom, the security and the opportunities that did not exist in other countries.

Under President Obama, DACA or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals was codified into law. DACA protects illegal immigrants who came to America with their families when they were minors. Basically if the now former minor is living a normal life without making trouble (going to school, working, paying taxes, etc), they receive a renewable two-year permit that allows them to stay in the country without fear of deportation.

President Trump is considering doing away with DACA.

I get it, illegal immigration is a problem. I also get that the process to legally immigrate and follow the rules to become a citizen is time-consuming and difficult. But at the same time, these kids did not have a choice in the matter. They came with their families and grew up as any normal American child. They should not be punished because their parents wanted a better life for them.

America is a country of immigrants. Most, if not all of us (including President Trump) can trace their family histories back to at least one person who left their birth place for the potential future of living in America. While lawful immigration is preferable, we need to understand why people immigrate illegally and show some compassion for them, especially for their children.

What President Trump Should Have Said

A President, regardless of his or her party or beliefs is the moral authority and should be leading the nation, especially during a crisis.

President Trump has failed in both areas (no surprise there). His remarks after last weekend’s rally in Charlottesville proved that he is neither the moral authority nor is he far from qualified to lead the nation, especially during this crisis.

What President Trump should have said is in the video above. Thank you Arnold Schwarzenegger for standing up for what is right and speaking truth to power.

It’s not uncommon knowledge that Ivanka Trump converted to Judaism when she married Jared Kushner. It is also common knowledge Jared’s grandparents survived the Holocaust. Their children are being raised Jewish. I would think (and hope) that Trump’s reaction, not a President, but as a father and grandfather would be of outrage and anger.

I know this has been said many times since last weekend, but my grandfathers, like millions of their brothers in arms, fought against fascism in World War II. The sons of Jewish immigrants, they put their lives on the line to protect America and her values. The fact that Trump has subtly given the alt-right the go ahead to slither out of the rocks they came from speak to his incompetence and how ill prepared he is to lead this country.

P.S. Did anyone else do a happy dance when Steve Bannon was fired?

You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught

I’m not a huge fan of the classic musicals, but sometimes, one of them resonates so deeply that it is as relevant in 2017 as it was when it was initially introduced to audiences.

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1949 musical, South Pacific is set on an unnamed island in the South Pacific during World War II. The underlying message of the narrative is basically that racism of any kind is wrong. The story focuses on the will they or won’t they relationship between two couples: an American nurse and a French expatriate plantation owner with mixed race children and a soldier and a native girl.

While the show has it’s lighter moments, one the best remembered songs (in my opinion at least), is “You’ve Got To Be Carefully Taught”.

The rally in Charlottesville yesterday proved that America has a long way to go in achieving the ideals of the Founding Fathers.

It did not help, of course, that President Trump’s statement was vague and he did not outright condemn the hate filled marchers, but honestly who is surprised by that?

We were warned, btw by Hillary Clinton last year.

Heather Heyer lost her life to this hate.  I hope this is a wake up call for all Americans. The progress we have made as Americans in reaching the ideals set forth by the Founding Fathers represents the work of multiple generations. But for as much work as we have done, this weekend proves that we still have a long way to go.

Trump’s New Immigration Policy

America, despite its lofty ideals of freedom and diversity, can sometimes be described as “do as I say, not as I do”.

Our immigration policy history is not as welcoming as we might think. Added to the list of these policies is President Trump’s new immigration policy, if Congress agrees to codify it into law, will be one more blemish on the lofty ideals that we claim to be proud of.

Unless someone can say that they have Native American ancestry (and even their ancestors had to come from somewhere else), we are all immigrants. Most Americans can trace their family back to someone who chose to leave their family and their homeland for a new life in America. That is the first issue that I have with the proposed amendment to the immigration policy. The second is a reply to the b*llsh*t excuse that has been used for generations to prevent new immigrants from coming into the country: they will take our jobs. While some new immigrants may have a professional background and a degree, many others have to start from scratch. Find me an American citizen who wants to spend their days picking vegetables under a hot sun or washing dishes in a restaurant and earning minimum wage. That person is unlikely to be found.

I could go on, but I think Stephen Colbert’s response and satirical revision of Emma Lazarus’s The New Colossus in response to the new proposed policy says it all.

The Mooch-Out

Anthony Scaramucci (known as The Mooch) has the shortest political career in recent memory. He was hired a week and a half ago to replace Sean Spicer as the White House Communications Director. As of today, he no longer retains the position.

The question on everyone’s mind for the last 10 days has been who would play him when Saturday Night Live returns in the fall.

We may never have the pleasure of seeing Saturday Night Live’s sendoff of Scaramucci, but we still have Mario Cantone playing the Mooch opposite Anthony Atamanuik as Donald Trump on The President Show. It’s absolutely perfect.

The Military Transgender Ban-It’s So Beyond Wrong

In the nearly 8 months that Donald Trump has been President, his presidency has been one scandal after another.

The latest is the ban on transgender troops in the military.

I don’t know how low this man can sink (though turning on Jeff Sessions is pretty low), but he may be reaching the bottom.

The military is not for everyone. But those who choose to serve, regardless of whether they are gay, straight, sexually fluid, transgender, etc, we should be thanking them for their service, not banning them from serving. They are potentially giving up their lives to safeguard not only our country, but democracy.

President Trump has no respect for anyone or anything, unless they serve his needs. He flies off the handle, acts more like a ten-year old boy than a 70ish year old man who happens to the President and thinks that Congress will automatically do his bidding. That is not the way a democracy works.

It’s time to get this man out of the oval office before he runs this country, like many of his businesses into the ground.
