Reality television, whether we like it or not, has become part and parcel of our television viewing schedule.
Giuliana and Bill was on the air from 2009-2014. The show followed the lives of two married TV personalities: E! News anchor Giuliana Rancic and season one The Apprentice winner Bill Rancic. As with every reality show in which the focus is a celebrity, this program told the story of the daily lives of their subjects.
If the point of this show and the sub-genre of celebrity based reality shows is to prove how normal they are, this show succeeds. However, it seems to be self-serving with a “look at me” attitude. I do recall watching this program, but looking back, I wish I had spent my precious TV time watching another program.
It’s normal for journalists and historians to write about a particular politician or about a particular Presidential administration. But that normally takes place years later and is usually written about in hindsight. The number of books about you know who while he is still in power says something his Presidency.
The latest book to add to the list is Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House. Written by former The Apprentice contestant and White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman, the book is part confessional and part memoir. She starts off by giving the reader a brief overview of her childhood and life before meeting you know who. The rest of the book concentrates on her brief stint working in the White House, revealing behind the scenes facts that the average American would not have normal access to.
Depending on the reader’s perspective, Mrs. Newman is either a disgruntled ex-employee who is using her fame to smear her former boss or she has found the moral conviction to reveal the truth. Either way, the book is an eye-opening insight into our current Presidential administration.
When you know who was elected President nearly two years ago, he claimed to have “the best people” working for him. Among those he hired was Omarosa. Last December, she was fired and this week, she has been promoting her new book, Unhinged: An Insider’s Account of the Trump White House. One of her accusations against her former boss (surprise, surprise) is that he is both racist and sexist. His response (again, no surprise there) is to discredit her via his favorite social media platform.
As I read about the accusations coming from both ends, I can’t help but argue from both sides of the accusation, as much as I would prefer not to.
A cynic would say that Omarosa is a disgruntled ex-employee who is using her more than extended 15 minutes of fame to promote her book. She also knew that when she recorded the tapes from the Situation Room, that it was a breach of security protocol.
However, any citizen with half a brain also knows that the man known as President Of The United States is both racist and sexist. He routinely sends dog whistles to whose who believe that America should be dominated by those who are Caucasian and Christian (and male by extension).
While I have not yet read the book, I have a feeling that the battle between what is truth and what is “alternative facts” will continue until you know who leaves office.
This hobby blog is dedicated to movie nerdom, nostalgia, and the occasional escape. In the late 90s, I worked at Blockbuster Video where they let me take home two free movies a day. I caught up on the classics and wrote movie reviews for Denver 'burbs newspapers and magazines. Today, I continue to revisit the old and discover the new on the screen. Comments and dialogue are highly encouraged. This year, I'm excited to collaborate with other writers via SLICETHELIFE in which we will share our movie genre favorites in our 2021 Movie Draft!
