Chevalier Movie Review

For every artist whose work is known and celebrated across the centuries, there are others that are often forgotten. These forgotten creators have often been pushed aside because they are not Caucasian and male.

The 2022 biopic, Chevalier, is the story of the biracial composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges (Kelvin Harrison Jr.). The illegitimate son of a French planter and a female slave, he rises to the very top of society. Among the wealthy and the elite, Chevalier becomes a favorite of Marie Antoinette (Lucy Boynton). He also gets involved with the Marie-Joséphine de Comarieu (Samara Weaving). The complications set in because Marie-Joséphine is married and her husband does not want her to perform.

Being that this is my first introduction to this man, I cannot confirm what is fact and what has been embellished for the screen. That being said, the film is enjoyable and entertaining. Both the narrative and the actors are top-notch. If nothing else, it is a reminder of how quickly we can fall from the heights of fame and power.

Do I recommend it? Yes.

Chevalier is available for streaming on Hulu.

P.S. Happy Independence Day.
