Happy Holidays, America: Another Mass Shooting

There are many things I wish for. High on my list is to get through the day without Americans being killed because of a lack of gun control.

Yesterday, a gunman opened fire at UNLV in Las Vegas. Three people were killed.

The holiday season is in full swing. Instead of spending time with their loved ones and enjoying the simple pleasures in life, three individuals are dead. Three families must now contend with their loss and the fact that December will never be the same again.

Happy Thursday.

A Light in the Darkness: Chanukah

Tonight is the first night of Chanukah. Tonight we remember our ancestors who fought against assimilation and destruction.

Today is also the 2-month anniversary of October 7th.

On Monday, one of the segments on The Brian Lehrer Show was about the divides in the Democratic party. One of the topics was the current conflict between Israel and Hamas. Among the callers was a Palestinian woman who detailed what her family had been through. My heart broke for her.

While Israel has every right to defend herself, that does not include harassing Arab/Palestinian residents because they can. That only adds fuel to the fire and gives the other side additional bodies and manpower.

Two related stories have come up this week. The first is that the powers that be in Gaza are not spreading the wealth when it comes to resources coming from outside nations.

The second is that several presidents of major American universities were unable to answer basic yes or no questions when it came to protecting Jewish students and staff. My regular readers know that I veer to the left when it comes to politics. But, in this case, I thank the members of the GOP for doing what is right.

I am all for freedom of speech, but targeting a specific group for murder does not require context. It’s as if they are waiting for someone to be injured or killed before real action is taken.

Happy Chanukah.

P.S. Today is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor. I can’t think of a better reminder of what we need to fight for as Americans.

Throwback Thursday: Easy Virtue (2008)

Being the stranger in a proverbial strange land is always difficult. Learning how to survive while figuring out who is who always has a steep learning curve.

The 2008 film, Easy Virtue, is based on the Noel Coward play of the same name. Set in the 1920s, John Whittaker (Ben Barnes) is the heir to an English estate that is on the brink of bankruptcy. Instead of marrying an heiress and using her fortune to save the family property, he marries American racer Larita (Jessica Biel).

His mother, Veronica (Kristin Scott Thomas), is horrified by her new daughter-in-law. They get along like oil and water. She is also doing everything she can to not become homeless. It doesn’t help that her husband (Colin Firth), who fought for his country in World War I, is not exactly pulling his weight. He is also indirectly standing with Larita instead of supporting his wife and children.

I enjoyed this movie. It is light, funny, and charming. The conflict between Larita and Veronica kept me chuckling.

Firth’s performance was the hillight of the film. He plays both against type while inhabiting a role that seems to be tailor-made for him.

Do I recommend it? Yes.

After 20 Years, I Came Out in February

What positive events have taken place in your life over the past year?

I knew I was gay a long time ago, but it took me two decades to come out.

It was one of the most difficult things that I’ve ever done, but the end result was nothing but love. The positive aspect is that my mental health is just a tiny bit better.
