Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism Book Review

History is a series of actions in which those of us in the present can learn from. The question is, do we make sure that the mistakes of previous generations are learned from or are they repeated?

Rachel Maddow‘s latest non-fiction/history book Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism, was published in October. Taking off where her podcast, Ultra left off, she tells the story of how Nazi Germany tried to infiltrate the United States before and during World War II. Taking advantage of the brewing antisemitism and isolationism, the end goal of these agents was to turn America into a carbon copy of Germany.

Their efforts did not go unnoticed. Individual citizens went undercover to expose the spies and make sure that the perpetrators had their day in court. However, the prosecution of the spies and their American counterparts did not go as planned.

I found this book to be unsettling and prevalent. Even though the story takes place nearly 80 years ago, the details are too close to what is happening in this country today. If nothing else, it is a reminder of how close we came to losing our democracy and why we must prioritize it today.

The story is a nail-biter. It kept me hanging on until the final page.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely. It is one of my favorites of the year.
