Not Just Me: Anxiety, depression, and learning to embrace your weird Book Review

There is a presumption that just because you are a successful performer, that your life is perfect. The truth is one’s problems are only made worse by the spotlight.

Former 1990s child star Lisa Jakub has lived with mental health issues for decades. Best remembered for Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) and Independence Day (1996), she left Hollywood for the life of a writer and yoga teacher. She published Not Just Me: Anxiety, depression, and learning to embrace your weird in 2017. Her journey explores the various aspects of mental illness and how different treatments work for different patients.

I appreciated this book. Jakub is not afraid to get her hands figuratively dirty and speak of her own past. Using examples from her life and the people she interviewed, Jakub reveals what we all know. Mental health is widespread and affects millions around the world. The sooner that we face it and understand it, the quicker that it becomes less taboo and more respected as a real illness.

Do I recommend it? Yes.
