I Hate to Say It, But I (Sort of) Agree With Florida’s New Social Media Ban Law

Growing up contains all sorts of physical and emotional hazards. The last thing our kids need is social media to amplify the pitfalls. But as much good as it does, there are an equal amount of pitfalls.

Just under two weeks ago, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill that bans children under the age of 14 from creating social media accounts in the state. I hate to say it, but I (sort of) agree with DeSantis. The dangers are well documented.

That being said, not every young person matures at the same rate. Parents should be the arbiter of whether or not their progeny is ready to enter the realm of online media.

The push-pull between government regulation and parental choice is nothing new. It is just a matter of how to balance governmental response with personal responsibility.
